GP doctor AlexanderI graduated from Democritus University Medical School in 1999. Following a year of medical and surgical internship in Greece, I joined the General Hospital Ippokrateio Training Scheme in general practice. From 2007 I started my own surgery in Ouranoupoli Halkidiki (GP doctor) to provide my patients with a first class Private Primary Care service.

Flu Clinic

Seasonal flu vaccination programme for 2014-2015

This is a reminder on the arrangements for the seasonal flu vaccine programme which is currently under way with vaccinations being available from October to February (subject to availability). Vaccine also suitable for children from 6 months. If your child is under 9 years of age and has not been vaccinated before against flu a second dose is recommended after at least 4 weeks. Flu vaccines can be used in all stages of pregnancy and also during breast feeding.

MEDICAL PROFILE FOR THOSE MOST AT RISK

  • All Patients over 65 years of age
  • Asthmatics
  • Chronic lung or chest conditions (6months or older)
  • Diabetics (6 months or older)
  • Healthcare workers/key workers/care workers eg Emergency personnel
  • Heart disease (6 months or older)
  • Kidney / liver patients (6 months or older)
  • Patients with low immunity eg cancer patients with or on treatment
  • Patients with stroke or neurological conditions
  • Women who will be pregnant during the influenza season

Sport Injuries

Sportsmen of all ages and abilities run the risk of injury. Many injuries result from inadequate or inappropriate preparation or playing on an existing injury, although accidental injury can and does happen.

Causes
  • Inadequate or inappropriate preparation prior to sporting activities. Warm up exercises - to increase blood to muscles, making them more flexible. Cool down period - to prevent next day stiffness
  • Too much training or repetitive activities. Pain occurring during or after exercise should not be ignored
  • Improper shoes or equipment
  • Incorrect technique - commonly occurring injuries in golfers and weight lifters
  • Collision - in contact sports - basketball, football, hockey etc.
  • Returning to exercise too soon following an injury
Treatment

If an injury is sustained and severe pain and immediate swelling occurs, seek medical assistance. Otherwise, follow RICE:

  • Rest
  • Ice
  • Compression
  • Elevation
